"A" Team Loses the Semi-Final Home Leg - June 14, 2009

The "A" youth team (1990-91) lost the home leg of the national semi-final against Steaua Bucharest, 3-4. Paul Dirjan scored first for CFR with a nice shot from the edge of the box after Marian Pop and Cucuruzan both could not find the target.  Steaua then somehow managed to score three unanswered in the first half after several dreadful defensive errors. The score at the break was 1-3. The youngsters came out from the dressing room much more determined and were the better side in the final 45 minutes. Cristea scored with a powerful shot from 25 meters out, making the score 2-3. Steaua then popped one in after a quick counterattack. Late in the game, Kiraly pulled one back after capitalizing on a Steaua defensive error. In the final minutes, Sergiu Bus missed two huge chances for CFR. Bus' first shot went wide, while his diving header in stoppage time hit the crossbar. CFR will play Steaua at Bucharest in the critical away leg. The winner will then advance to the national final.
