ABOUT

Alexandru Veresezan

My name is Marius and I am Alex  Veresezan’s father. As you know Alex created this website in 2008.

Alex sadly passed away at the beginning of 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Even though Alex had right leg surgery for osteosarcoma in 2008, therefore not able to play football anymore, he maintained a keen interest in football. He continued to follow CFR games and work on this website.

In this letter I would like to tell you more about Alex. For us as  parents, Alexandru was a beautiful child, a gift from God. He grew up to become a fine young man, full of strength and vitality. He matured and developed an exceptional moral judgment. He was very good in what ever he started to do. He liked school, but also times with his friends, as well as spending time with his family. He loved sports, he played football and water polo for many years and he played them well. Football was his passion, starting at an early age, and remained consistently his flame throughout  the years.

History was one of the subjects that he excel in. Other of his interests included: politics, psychology, writing, sports, music, anything that could give him a better understanding of the world. He hopped that, one day he would help change the world to a better place.

Alex's courage and love for life inspired us and many others around us. As his father, I thought would be very special to honour Alex’s memory and continue to update cfrcluj.net. For Alex it was important to inform anyone interested about CFR Cluj, but who could not read Romanian.

As Alex write in his May 2009 letter: “ I await your feedback with an open mind”.

Who am I? Why do I support CFR Cluj?

As a Romanian-born immigrant in Canada, I always have had a keen interest in football. As my father was originally from Cluj, he was an avid Universitatea fan, having supported the team since the 1960s. Even though Universitatea was his first love, he also chose to support another team from Cluj, CFR. In the 70s, when CFR Cluj was playing in Romania's top football tier, he regularly attended matches in Gruia and he can still recall some of the more memorable games. Even after 1994, when our family moved to Canada, my father still followed Romanian football over the internet. His passion for the world's most popular sport eventually rubbed off on me. As a Romanian would say, I caught the football "bug".

During the autumn of 2003, CFR was battling for promotion to Divizia A. Reaching first spot after several rounds of play, the team looked poised to earn access to Romania's top league. My father was very excited to finally see CFR on the verge of success after 28 years spent in the depths of mediocrity. For no apparent reason, his enthusiasm began to influence me. I actually began to follow CFR's progress and to live every moment, every success, every failure. You can just imagine my joy when I heard the news of CFR's promotion to Divizia A.

As time wore on and I began to mature into an adult, I continued to follow my number one club. There were setbacks along the way, but also many unforgettable moments. The win against Dinamo in 2004 (4-2), against Steaua in 2005 (1-0), against Rapid in 2007 (3-2) are the first to come to mind. There were other remarkable moments as well, such as the Intertoto campaign in 2005 when CFR earned international recognition for the first time.

Quite frankly, the primary reason I support CFR is because of my love of football. I simply enjoy watching an entertaining match of football. Secondly, I once lived in Cluj as a child before coming to Canada and have visited the city many times since. I cherish fond memories from my time spent there and I long to travel there again. The third reason I support CFR is because I admire the club's success and the way in which it was achieved. Although I'm not a die-hard capitalist, I can certainly appreciate the rise of an enterprise from nothing through hard work, smart investment, and dedication.

Why did I create CFRCluj.net?

During the summer of 2006, CFR Cluj built up an impressive squad and unofficially became a member of the football elite in Romania. I was certain that with this kind of continued investment and support, the club would play in Europe regularly in the near future. So, I toyed with the idea of creating an English fansite to inform anyone interested about the club, but who could not read Romanian. Though it would be another two years before I actually acted upon this idea, the thought was always in the back of my mind.

Finally, in May 2008 I made the decision to devote my time to a new hobby: CFRCluj.net. I had made a website before and I knew the basics. At first the site was pretty rudimentary, but over time it evolved into what you see before you today. I hope to continue regularly updating CFRCluj.net for many years in the future and I await your feedback with an open mind.
